Fruit consumption has increased mainly due to its nutritional value and therapeutic effects. These foods contain distinct phytochemicals and many of those display anti-oxidant properties associated to retarded aging and disease prevention, such as certain types of cancer. Due to its particularities, mainly its low cost, banana consumption is widespread by human being, which makes it a noteworthy fruit crop, due to its potential as functional and nutraceutic food. Brazil is the second largest banana producer in the world, yielding 7.1 million tons in 2006 in approximately 500 thousand hectares (FAO, 2008). Currently, commercial cultivars, especially those from the Cavendish group, do not exhibit significant amount of substances with nutritional or therapeutic potential, such as polyphenols, vitamin C and carotenoids. In contrast, there are reports of banana genotypes, identified in germplasm banks, that show high content of those substances (Setiawan et al., 2001; Someya et al., 2002; Englberger et al. 2003a, 2003b and 2003c; Wall, 2006). The characterization of the carotenoid content and the estimation of the genetic variability available for plant breeding of those genotypes, using DNA molecular markers, constitute useful information for parental selection for crosses between divergent genotypes, in order to explore heterosis, and for the development of novel cultivars with functional properties. |
